Call tracking numbers without wrecking your local SEO

Short answer: Put the tracking number in your Google Business Profile's primary phone field and your real main number in an additional phone field, keep the main number everywhere else as the "official" one, and use dynamic number insertion on your website so the main number stays in the page's HTML and schema. The tracking number must be a local, non-premium number that rings your business and that you control. Done that way, you get call data without scattering conflicting numbers across the web.

The problem

You want to know which channel makes the phone ring: Google Maps, organic search, ads, the truck wrap. The tool for that is a set of tracking numbers, each forwarding to your real line and logging the call.

The worry is consistency. Local search relies on your business details matching across the web, and a tracking number is, by definition, a number that doesn't match. Three things go wrong in practice:

  1. Numbers multiply. A tracking number used on a directory listing gets copied by data aggregators and other sites. Years later, it is still out there.
  2. Numbers die. Cancel the tracking account and every place that number spread to now leads nowhere.
  3. Search engines get conflicting signals. Your site says one number, your profile another, three directories a third.

So the setup below has one rule: tracking numbers live only where you can change them and where you need the data.

What Google's guidelines say about the phone field

Google's Business Profile guidelines don't mention call tracking by name, but they set the conditions any number on your profile must meet:

  • It connects to your individual business location.
  • Use a local number rather than a central call-center helpline where possible.
  • It must not redirect callers to a number other than the actual business's.
  • It must be under the direct control of the business.
  • Premium-rate numbers are not acceptable.

A forwarding tracking number that rings your own phones, on an account you own, fits those conditions. A number owned by your agency, or one that routes callers to a third-party call center, does not.

Google's help page on adding phone numbers says you can add up to two more numbers besides the primary one (mobile or landline, not fax), and the guidelines note that additional numbers can be used on Business Profile websites and other local surfaces. In Google's community forum, a Gold Product Expert answered a question on exactly this: you can put a call tracking number as the primary phone and your landline or main number as an additional one, which helps Google associate the numbers rather than treat them as conflicting. That's a volunteer expert's answer, not an official policy page, but it matches how the fields are designed.

Setup options

Where Option A: no tracking Option B: tracking on the profile only Option C: profile + dynamic website numbers
Google Business Profile Main number Tracking number as primary, main as additional Tracking number as primary, main as additional
Website Main number Main number Main number in HTML; script swaps in a source-specific number for visitors
Schema markup Main number Main number Main number
Directories, social profiles Main number Main number Main number
What you learn Nothing beyond the profile's own reports Calls from your profile, from the tracking provider Calls by profile, ad, organic, referral and campaign

Option B is enough for most single-location businesses. Option C suits you if you run ads or several campaigns and need to compare them.

Recommended configuration

1. Own the tracking account and the numbers

Open the call tracking account in the business's name and pay for it yourself, even if an agency manages it. If the agency relationship ends, the numbers on your profile must stay live. Ask the provider whether numbers can be ported out before you choose one.

2. Pick local numbers

Use a number in the same area code as your main line. It meets Google's local-number preference and looks right to the caller.

3. Set the Business Profile fields

In your profile, go to Edit profile, then Contact, then Phone number. Enter the tracking number as the primary, then "Add phone number" for your main line. Don't hide the phone number unless you really don't take calls.

4. Keep the website's HTML on the main number

Dynamic number insertion is a small script that replaces the displayed number for visitors who arrived from a specific source. Configure it so:

  • The phone number in the page source, footer and contact page is your main number.
  • The swap happens in the browser after the page loads, for the visible text and the tap-to-call link.
  • Search engines crawling the page see the main number.

5. Put the main number in structured data

Google's LocalBusiness structured data includes a telephone property, shown in its examples in international format (for instance +1 followed by the number). Use the main number there, never a tracking number.

6. Never put tracking numbers on citations

Directories, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing, social profiles and your email signature get the main number. If you need to measure a specific directory, track the clicks to your site instead.

7. Test after setup

  • Search your business name on Google and call the number shown from a mobile.
  • Load your site from a Google search result and from an ad, and check the number changes as intended.
  • View the page source to confirm the main number is still there.
  • Make sure missed tracked calls reach voicemail, not a dead end.
