Eircodes, Google Maps and your Irish business listing

Short answer: Because an Eircode points to one specific address rather than a whole street or townland, it is the most reliable thing you can give customers and couriers in Ireland. Show it on your contact page and in your schema markup, include it in your Google Business Profile address, and if the pin is still wrong, drag it to the right spot in the profile's location settings. On your own forms, ask for the Eircode as its own field so deliveries and call-outs land at the right door.

Irish addresses are notoriously hard to geocode. Eircode's own site says over 35% of addresses in Ireland share their address with at least one other property, and rural townland addresses can cover dozens of houses. That's why a customer can type your perfectly correct address and still end up at a farm gate two kilometres away.

Eircode in one paragraph

According to Eircode, each code has seven characters in two parts: a three-character Routing Key for the principal post town area, and a four-character Unique Identifier for the individual address. A typical one reads A65 F4E2. Codes are not sequential, so the neighbour's code tells you nothing about yours, and the character set deliberately leaves out the letter O (zero is used instead). There are 139 postal areas, and they can cross county lines; Dublin's old district numbers are the one place where the routing key mirrors a familiar area name.

Touchpoint 1: Your website

Contact page and footer

Write the full address followed by the Eircode on its own, in capitals with a space after the routing key: "Unit 4, Main Street, Carrick, A65 F4E2" (hypothetical). Customers copy it straight into their maps app; Eircode announced back in 2017 that Eircodes can be used in Google Maps to locate addresses.

Add a "Directions" link that opens a map at your exact location, and test it on a phone outside your own Wi-Fi. If it lands on the wrong building, fix the Business Profile pin first (below), because most map links resolve to that.

Schema markup

Google's LocalBusiness structured data uses a PostalAddress with streetAddress, addressLocality, addressRegion, postalCode and addressCountry. Put the Eircode in postalCode and "IE" in addressCountry. Add geo coordinates too, taken from the corrected pin, so the page and the map agree.

Several locations

Give each branch its own page with its own address, Eircode and map. A single "locations" page with three addresses and no codes is where customers get lost.

Touchpoint 2: Google Business Profile

Enter the address properly

Google's help on business addresses asks for a complete street address, including building, unit and floor details, and only information that is part of the official address. Where the official address isn't precise enough, it allows nearby cross-streets or landmarks. Include your Eircode in the postcode field.

Fix a misplaced pin

If the marker sits on the wrong building:

  1. Open your Business Profile and select Edit profile, then Location.
  2. Next to "Business location", select the pencil.
  3. Select Adjust, move the map until the pin sits on your entrance, then Done and Save.

Google says changes usually show within about 10 minutes, but can take up to 30 days if the edit goes to review. Moving the pin also changes which Street View image your profile shows, according to the same help page, so it's worth checking that too.

Service-area businesses

If you work from home and travel to customers, Google says to hide your address and list a service area instead. Your Eircode still matters for verification and for your own systems, but it shouldn't appear publicly on the profile.

Touchpoint 3: Your forms

This is where Eircodes save the most real time and money.

  • Make Eircode its own field, labelled "Eircode", after the address lines. Don't fold it into "Address line 3".
  • Accept any reasonable format: upper or lower case, with or without the space. Normalise it in the background to capitals with a space after the third character.
  • Treat a letter O as zero. Eircode's guidance is that systems should read an "O" typed by the customer as the number zero, since O isn't used.
  • Validate the shape, not the existence, unless you have a licensed lookup. A simple check for three plus four characters catches typos without blocking real codes.
  • Consider an address lookup. Eircode licenses its address database to businesses through providers, and Google's Address Validation API lists Ireland in its coverage table. A lookup lets customers type the code and get the full address filled in.

For booking forms (trades, mobile services, deliveries), make the field required. For a contact form, leave it optional.

Touchpoint 4: Deliveries and call-outs

  • Pass the Eircode through every step. If your shop platform collects it, check that it reaches the courier label and the driver's app intact, not truncated or dropped into a notes field.
  • Put it on job sheets. Technicians heading to a rural address should navigate by the code, not the townland name.
  • Use it in automated messages. A booking confirmation that repeats the customer's Eircode gives them a chance to correct it before the van leaves.

FAQ

My Eircode is right, but Google Maps still shows the wrong spot. Why?

Maps may be using your profile's pin, which can be placed independently of the address. Adjust the pin in your Business Profile's location settings.

Can two businesses in one building share an Eircode?

Eircode is assigned per postal address, so units with their own postal address usually have their own codes. Check yours on the Eircode Finder rather than guessing.

My premises is new and has no Eircode yet. What now?

Eircode says new addresses are added from an updated database each month. Until yours appears, use the full address and set the map pin manually.

Should I make Eircode mandatory at checkout?

For deliveries in Ireland it is worth it, as long as you also handle overseas addresses and accept codes typed in lower case or without a space.

Drivers still ending up at the wrong townland is usually a form problem, and we can rebuild the address step around the Eircode.
