Nordic Checkout Payment Methods: Swish, Vipps MobilePay, Klarna

Short answer: Selling online in the Nordics means offering cards plus the local mobile wallet: Swish in Sweden, Vipps in Norway, MobilePay in Denmark and Finland, and often Klarna for invoice or pay-later. You can add them either directly (a Swish Handel agreement with your Swedish bank, a Vipps MobilePay merchant agreement) or through a payment provider that bundles them. As of November 2026, list prices range from around 1.50 SEK plus 0.3% per Swish Handel payment at Nordea to roughly 3% for Klarna through Stripe, so the choice is usually about coverage and admin rather than fees alone.

Country by country

Country Must-have beyond cards Often expected Notes
Sweden Swish Klarna Swish runs through Swedish banks and BankID
Norway Vipps Klarna Vipps and MobilePay merged into Vipps MobilePay
Denmark MobilePay Klarna Same company as Vipps; MobilePay brand in Denmark
Finland MobilePay Klarna MobilePay brand in Finland

Apple Pay and Google Pay are worth turning on everywhere too; check how your provider prices them.

What each method costs (list prices, November 2026)

Swish (Sweden)

Swish for business is sold by banks, so prices differ by bank. Nordea's page, as an example, lists for Swish Handel (the version that integrates into a webshop checkout): free connection, an annual fee of 720 SEK, and 1.50 SEK + 0.3% per payment received, capped at 10 SEK. The cheaper-looking Swish Företag (a Swish number and QR code) doesn't integrate into an online checkout, according to the same comparison.

Through a payment provider instead: Stripe's Swedish local payment methods page lists Swish at 1% + 3.00 kr per payment with a 7.00 kr cap. Stripe's own documentation marks Swish as a private preview, so check availability on your account before planning around it.

Vipps MobilePay (Norway, Denmark, Finland)

Vipps MobilePay publishes country price lists for its standard business tier and says other tiers may be available by agreement or through partners:

  • Norway: 2.99% + NOK 1 per transaction for online payment integration and recurring payments; payment links 2.49% + NOK 1
  • Denmark: 0.59% + DKK 1 per transaction, changing automatically to 0.89% + DKK 1 from 1 January 2027, with a note that prices may vary through partners; payment links 1.49% + DKK 1

Through Stripe, MobilePay (Denmark and Finland) is listed on its Swedish pricing page at 1.5% + 2.80 kr. Stripe's documentation describes MobilePay as a card wallet: the customer approves in the app and Stripe processes the underlying card payment.

One change to note: in March 2026 Vipps MobilePay announced it was selling its all-in-one Checkout product to the Swedish company Kustom, which becomes a recommended checkout partner. If you used or planned to use Vipps MobilePay Checkout, check your contract and the migration path.

Klarna

Klarna's own merchant pricing is negotiated, so we've used a published reseller rate: Stripe lists Klarna for Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden at 2.99% + 4.00 kr per transaction, plus 2% if currency conversion is needed. That's higher than cards, which is the price of offering invoice and instalments.

Cards, for comparison

Stripe's Swedish page lists domestic card payments at 1.5% + 1.80 kr for standard European Economic Area cards.

Worked example: a hypothetical 600 SEK order

Method Route Fee per order
Swish Handel Nordea direct 1.50 + 1.80 = 3.30 SEK (plus the annual fee)
Swish Stripe 6.00 + 3.00 = 9.00 → capped at 7.00 SEK
Card (standard EEA) Stripe 9.00 + 1.80 = 10.80 SEK
Klarna Stripe 17.94 + 4.00 = 21.94 SEK

Direct Swish is cheapest per order, but you pay the annual fee and handle a separate agreement and integration. At low volumes the provider route's simplicity often wins.

Integration options

Option 1: One payment provider for everything

Use a provider that supports cards, the local wallets and Klarna in one integration. Pros: one contract, one dashboard, one payout, refunds in one place. Cons: slightly higher fees on some methods, and you depend on which wallets that provider actually supports in your country.

Best for: shops selling across several Nordic countries, or small teams.

Option 2: Direct agreements

Sign Swish Handel with your bank and a Vipps MobilePay agreement directly, and integrate their APIs or official plugins for your shop platform. Pros: the lowest per-transaction prices and a direct relationship. Cons: more contracts, more technical set-up per method, and separate reconciliation.

Best for: higher-volume shops in one main market.

Option 3: A Nordic checkout provider

Several Nordic checkout products bundle all of the above into one embedded checkout, often with shipping options built in. Pros: a familiar experience for local shoppers. Cons: less control over the checkout design and another party in the chain.

Checkout checklist

  • [ ] Wallet shown first on mobile for the shopper's country (Swish for .se, Vipps for .no, MobilePay for .dk/.fi)
  • [ ] Prices in local currency, not euros for Swedish shoppers
  • [ ] Refunds tested for every method before launch
  • [ ] Swish payments tested on a real phone with BankID; desktop flows need a QR code
  • [ ] Klarna's terms shown clearly when invoice or instalments are offered
  • [ ] Payment method logos match what's actually enabled

FAQ

Can a business outside Sweden accept Swish?

Swish for business is offered through Swedish banks, and Stripe's documentation lists Sweden as the only customer location with SEK as the currency. A non-Swedish business usually needs a provider that can offer Swish to it, if any can.

Is MobilePay still a separate brand from Vipps?

The company is Vipps MobilePay; customers still see Vipps in Norway and MobilePay in Denmark and Finland.

Do I need Klarna if I already have Swish?

Not always. Klarna adds pay-later and invoice options that some shoppers prefer for larger orders. For low-value orders, Swish and cards cover most buyers.

Which is cheapest for a small Swedish shop?

On list prices, Swish Handel direct is cheapest per order, but the annual fee and set-up effort matter at low volumes. Compare your expected monthly order count against each route.
