Reprinting a POS Receipt: Retrieve the Sale, Do Not Repeat It
A failed receipt printer should lead staff back to the existing sale, not into a second checkout. Before commissioning a POS extension, agree how an employee finds the correct completed order, produces another receipt and handles a customer who wants it sent elsewhere. Receipt output, customer delivery and payment need distinguishable outcomes.
This guide concerns an operational receipt workflow. It does not establish fiscal receipt requirements, invoice numbering, retention periods or which documents a business must supply. Have the applicable document rules reviewed separately before approving the implementation.
Start with the customer's actual request
In a fictional shop, a customer pays and the printer produces an unreadable slip. The cashier needs another readable copy of that sale. Later, the customer asks for a digital receipt. Neither request means they want to buy the goods again.
Write down the supported requests individually: print again, send a receipt after payment, retrieve an older sale, correct a recipient address, or request an invoice. A single button called “Redo” is a poor description of these different actions. Decide which belong in the first release and which require a different authorised process.
Keep a change to the transaction outside ordinary receipt reproduction. If a customer disputes the quantity or price, staff need the approved correction procedure. Editing a historical receipt's amount merely to satisfy a printing request would conceal the real business issue.
Retrieve a known order before producing output
The Odoo 19 receipt documentation provides a concrete product example. Its reprint procedure opens Orders in the POS, filters to Paid, selects the desired order and prints its receipt. It also describes searching by receipt number, date or customer.
Use that sequence to frame your own demonstration. An employee should be able to identify the intended sale without creating a replacement order. Specify the context shown before printing, such as the relevant shop, transaction date, reference and amount. Agree access restrictions for staff retrieving historical customer transactions.
Two purchases by the same customer are not interchangeable. Test similar-looking results and require a deliberate selection rather than automatically choosing the latest customer match. These are proposed acceptance requirements, not claims that Odoo's documented search supplies every safeguard.
Specify the output channel and its limits
Odoo documents printing from the receipt screen after payment and sending via the available email or messaging controls. Its configuration also includes automatic receipt printing. The documentation states that without a configured receipt printer, the full-receipt print action invokes the browser's print function.
A browser print dialog is therefore not the same operational experience as a dedicated receipt printer. Ask for a demonstration using the intended hardware and the fallback that employees will actually have. Decide what staff do when paper runs out, the wrong printer is selected or a dialog is cancelled. Do not describe an initiated print request as proof that the customer received a readable copy.
For digital delivery, have the employee confirm the destination appropriate to this request. Decide whether entering a different email address changes only this delivery or also proposes a customer-record update. Do not silently turn a receipt request into a permanent contact change. Specify who may resend and how an uncertain previous send is checked before another attempt.
The cited page establishes product actions, not guaranteed email delivery, universal printer support or an audit trail for every resend. Any required delivery evidence and history must be implemented and tested separately.
Preserve the distinction between a copy and a correction
Agree what the reproduced document represents and which original values it must retain. Ask the financial-system owner how later refunds, corrected transactions and invoice requests affect the available documents. A receipt reproduction should not quietly rewrite the original transaction or imply that a later refund never happened.
Also decide what the interface says when an older sale cannot be retrieved through the supported path. Staff need a named escalation route, not an instruction to enter another sale to make a document appear. Document labels and mandatory contents need the relevant professional review; this article does not prescribe a legally sufficient “copy” marking.
Demonstrate recovery without another commercial movement
Use synthetic transactions to test a normal print, failed print, cancelled browser dialog, two similar paid orders, a digital destination correction and a historical transaction with a subsequent refund. Compare the selected sale and payment records before and after receipt actions. The intended result is another permitted document output, not another charge, order or stock movement.
Include those outcomes in your acceptance criteria. Bring the current receipt procedure, supported devices and document requirements to a POS integration discussion. The useful deliverable is a clear recovery path for staff and customers, not simply a second print icon.
