TikTok Shop or your own online store?
Short answer: TikTok Shop is a sales channel that only works as well as the videos and creators feeding it: people buy without leaving the app, you pay a commission on each order, and TikTok holds the customer relationship. Your own store is slower to grow but keeps your margins, data and brand under your control. For most UK brands the sensible set-up is your own store as the base, with TikTok Shop as a connected extra channel if your products sell well on video.
The pitch is tempting: a product goes viral and sells out overnight. The reality is closer to running a small TV channel that happens to have a till attached.
How TikTok Shop works for a seller
- Products live in TikTok's Seller Center. Shoppers buy through product links in videos, in LIVE streams, from your shop page and from TikTok's shopping areas, and pay inside the app.
- Creators can sell for you. TikTok's affiliate programme connects sellers with creators who promote products in videos and LIVEs. Its UK page says sellers pay commission only when a sale is made.
- TikTok takes a commission. TikTok Shop UK's fee introduction states a platform commission rate of 9%, inclusive of applicable taxes including VAT, as of November 2026. It's charged on net sales plus customer-paid shipping plus platform discounts, minus refunds.
- There are other lines on your statement. The same page lists affiliate commission, shipping fees (including Fulfilled by TikTok Shop where used) and other adjustments. The UK Commission Rate Policy also describes category-level and incentive reductions, which can lower the rate for some products, and says policies are updated periodically.
Read your Seller Center statement after the first few weeks; it's the only reliable view of what you actually keep.
TikTok Shop vs your own store
| TikTok Shop | Your own online store | |
|---|---|---|
| Where buyers come from | TikTok's feed, creators, LIVEs, Shop Tab | Search, email, social links, ads, word of mouth |
| What drives sales | A steady supply of short videos and creator content | Product pages, SEO, email, repeat customers |
| Cost per order | 9% commission plus affiliate commission and other fees (UK, as of November 2026) | Payment processing plus your platform and app costs |
| Customer relationship | Inside TikTok; limited direct marketing | Yours: email list, order history, accounts |
| Brand experience | TikTok's checkout and layout | Fully yours |
| Speed to first sale | Can be fast if content lands | Usually slower |
| Rules | TikTok's policies, which change | Your own |
| Risk | Sales tied to algorithm and account standing | Sales tied to your own marketing |
The content dependence, spelled out
On your own site, a product page keeps working while you sleep. On TikTok Shop, a product mostly sells while there's fresh content pointing at it. Before signing up, be honest about who will make that content:
- Can you post several short videos a week showing the product in use?
- Are your products easy to demonstrate in 15 to 60 seconds?
- Can you send free samples to creators and manage those collaborations?
- Does your margin still work after commission and an affiliate cut?
If the answer to most of these is no, TikTok Shop is likely to be a quiet shop with an admin burden.
Products that tend to suit it
Visual, demonstrable, mid-priced items: beauty and skincare routines, kitchen gadgets, fashion accessories, home décor, hobby supplies. Harder sells: anything needing a long explanation, made-to-order work with long lead times, high-ticket items where buyers want to compare.
A hybrid plan
1. Make your own store the source of truth
Keep products, stock and pricing in your own platform. TikTok's guide to connecting a Shopify store describes installing the TikTok sales channel, linking Seller Center, verifying your business, selecting regions and syncing products, so products, orders and inventory stay managed from Shopify. Other platforms have their own connectors. Whichever you use, stock should be counted in one place.
2. Start with a small range
List the five to ten products that look best on video, not your whole catalogue. Get fulfilment and returns right on those first.
3. Match your delivery promise
TikTok shoppers expect quick dispatch. Check that your shipping settings and handling time on TikTok match what you can actually do, especially if you fulfil yourself.
4. Give TikTok buyers a reason to find you later
Your packaging, insert card and brand name are what a TikTok buyer remembers. Make the brand searchable, so that when they want more, they find your store. Check TikTok's current seller policies on what you may include in parcels and messages.
5. Use TikTok content on your own site too
Videos that work on TikTok usually make strong product page videos. Repurpose them (with creators' permission) so your own store benefits from the same content.
6. Compare margin, not revenue
Each month, compare net margin per order on TikTok Shop against your own store, after commission, affiliate cuts, samples and returns. Revenue on TikTok can look exciting while the margin quietly disappears.
7. Have a plan if TikTok goes quiet
Algorithms shift and accounts get restricted. If TikTok Shop is a big share of sales, put effort into growing your email list from your own store every month.
FAQ
Do I need a website to sell on TikTok Shop?
No, you can sell through Seller Center alone. But without your own store you have no channel you control if TikTok changes its fees, rules or reach.
Is the 9% commission the whole cost?
No. TikTok's fee page lists affiliate commission, shipping fees and other adjustments separately, and you'll have payment, packaging and returns costs of your own. Reductions can apply to some categories, so check the current UK Commission Rate Policy.
Can I run ads to TikTok Shop products?
Yes, TikTok offers shop-linked ad formats. Test small budgets and compare against what the same spend does for your own store.
How do I avoid overselling between channels?
Sync stock from one system, keep a small buffer on fast sellers, and switch off TikTok listings if sync breaks.
