Receiving Shared Text and Photos in an Android Business App: A Draft, Not an Automatic Job

If staff should send a photo or a piece of text from another Android app into your business app, specify an incoming share destination. Choosing your app in the share menu should open a reviewable draft, not silently create a customer job or send a message. That is a product requirement to agree with the developer, not a default guaranteed by Android.

This is different from sharing an invoice out of your app, opening your own website link in the installed app, or opening an attachment picker inside a form. The person starts elsewhere and brings content into your workflow.

Decide what your app receives

List the actual task: one fault photo for an existing repair, several site photos for a visit, or selected text for a new enquiry. State which content types and combinations are supported. Receiving one image does not settle the behavior for a batch or an image accompanied by text.

Android's receiving-data guide explains that declared actions and MIME types tell the system what an app accepts. It cautions against accepting every type unless the app can handle any incoming content. Appearing as a destination is therefore not enough: ask for each advertised format to have a working receiving screen and a useful refusal path.

The same guide notes that a screenshot can arrive with an associated URL. Decide whether your app preserves both, offers a choice, or explains that it imports only the image. Do not silently convert accompanying text into an instruction or fetch a supplied URL as part of an unspecified automation.

Choose the account and destination deliberately

A technician may belong to two companies or have several open jobs. The source app usually does not know which record the technician intends. Require the receiving screen to show the active account and selected job before confirmation, with a way to change an incorrect destination.

If sign in is necessary, agree whether the draft survives that step and what happens when it cannot. Do not imply that a temporary source attachment will remain readable forever. Ask the developer to demonstrate the agreed handover on supported devices and to explain any access-duration limits.

For a hypothetical inspection app, sharing three photos would open an unsubmitted inspection draft. Staff select the visit, remove an unrelated photo, add a note and then save. That example is a proposed workflow, not a tested project result.

Review before using the content

Android explicitly recommends letting people confirm and edit shared content before the app uses it, especially text. Show what arrived, not just a generic success banner. Give the person a clear way to cancel without creating a business record.

The guide also warns that incoming MIME information can be wrong and images can be extremely large. Your implementation needs appropriate checks and stated limits, not blind trust in the sender's label. Ask for understandable handling of unreadable, unsupported and oversized items. These checks are part of a larger security review, not proof that every received file is safe.

Keep local review separate from server storage and any later notification. If a save is unconfirmed, show that uncertainty and reconcile it before offering a retry that could create another job. The share action itself is not customer consent to send a message.

Test the receiving journey

Use harmless sample content and the source apps your team actually uses. Include a single photo, multiple photos if supported, text, a screenshot with a URL, a wrong type, an unreadable item, and content above your agreed limit. Test signed-out entry, the wrong account, changing the target job, cancellation and a failed save.

Also open the business app normally afterwards: it should not replay an old share into another record. Put the required outcomes into your acceptance criteria. For an Android app project, bring examples of the incoming content and the destination screen staff should see. The deliverable is a controlled intake journey, not merely an icon in somebody else's share menu.

Source and boundary

Android Developers, Receive simple data from other apps, supports the platform receiving, review and input-checking facts above. Account choice, draft retention, job selection, retry reconciliation and notification boundaries are proposed requirements for your app. No device behavior or completed implementation is certified here.
