An RSS Feed for Your Business Website: What Should Readers Actually Receive?

An RSS feed is useful when readers want to follow published updates in a feed reader. Before commissioning one, specify which content belongs in it, how much of each article it exposes and which address readers should subscribe to. Do not treat adding an RSS icon as proof that the right information is being distributed.

A public feed and an email newsletter are different delivery choices. This guide concerns the public publishing interface, not collecting email subscribers or promising that a message reached somebody's inbox.

Choose the content, not just the format

WordPress's official feed documentation distinguishes feeds of site content from a comments feed. Its comments feed shows comments rather than the site's articles. That distinction matters in a brief: a working feed can still distribute the wrong material.

For a business publishing service updates and educational articles, write down the included sections. Decide whether recruitment posts, product announcements or comments belong elsewhere. Treat these as acceptance requirements for your implementation, not as features that every website already provides.

Specify the language too. A reader choosing German updates should not unexpectedly receive three translated copies of every article. Where separate language feeds are requested, agree their actual addresses and test their contents independently.

Full articles or summaries?

Choose whether the feed should expose the full text or a useful summary followed by the article link. Full text helps readers stay in their reader; a summary makes the website visit part of the reading journey. Neither choice should accidentally disclose content that was meant to remain private.

Ask for representative examples containing headings, a picture, a list and a link. Check the feed reader as well as the website. Describe what should happen when an image is unavailable and ensure the link opens the intended public article, not an editing preview.

These are practical specification choices. The cited WordPress page explains built-in feeds; it does not certify your site's custom rendering or access controls.

Keep one dependable subscription address

Record the public feed URL in the handover, with the section and language it represents. WordPress notes that not every theme displays every available feed type, so absence of an icon alone does not establish absence of a feed. Conversely, an icon is no guarantee that its destination works.

When a redesign changes addresses, include existing feed subscribers in the migration plan. WordPress documents forwarding older feed addresses with redirects. Ask the developer to implement the equivalent behavior for the actual hosting stack rather than copying an Apache configuration into an unrelated platform.

Accept the reader journey

Use a test reader and a small set of deliberately chosen public posts. Confirm that the subscription address loads, included articles appear, excluded sections stay absent and article links reach the right language. Then publish another test item and check the reader again. Agree what observation period is reasonable for that reader; do not promise immediate delivery to every application.

Also test a corrected article and a moved feed address. Record what the chosen reader actually does instead of promising that all readers will remove or update previously downloaded material. Removing something from a current feed should not be sold as recalling every copy.

A useful handover contains the feed URL, scope, text-length policy, responsible editor and migration test result. If you need this as part of a business website build, bring examples of the updates people should follow, not merely a request for an RSS button.

Source and limits

WordPress Feeds, reviewed 26 October 2026, supports the WordPress feed distinctions and migration example. The scope choices and test procedure above are practical commissioning guidance, not a claim that this website offers a feed or that RSS guarantees audience growth.
