Dismantling Finished Products: What Should an App Put Back Into Component Stock?
When your team dismantles an assembled item to recover parts, record the dismantling as its own operation. Identify the finished item removed from stock and the components actually recovered. Do not assume that reversing a recipe proves every original part is present, usable and ready for another job.
This guide concerns deliberate component recovery from an assembled product. It is not a repair procedure, a guide to dismantling hazardous equipment, or proof that recovered parts are safe to reuse.
An unbuild is not a cancelled production plan
Cancelling work before it happens leaves a different physical situation from taking apart an item that already exists. The application needs to reflect what happened in the building, not merely change a production order back to draft.
Odoo's unbuild-order documentation provides a concrete example: products are dismantled and components returned to inventory through a distinct unbuild order. It identifies the product, quantity, bill of materials, source location and destination for recovered components. An original manufacturing order can also be linked.
For your own application, decide which assembled items may be dismantled and who authorises the operation. Confirm that the item is actually held in the stated location and is not already committed to another operation under your stock policy.
The recipe is a starting point, not an inspection result
A bill of materials says what an assembly is expected to contain. An older item may have a different configuration, and some parts may be missing or damaged. Decide which product version or manufacturing record the operator uses and how discrepancies are handled.
In a hypothetical workshop, a dismantled stand yields a reusable base but a damaged fitting. The useful result is not simply “recipe reversed.” Staff need a record of the assembled item consumed, the recovered base, and the fitting's agreed disposition.
These are proposed acceptance requirements, not claims that the cited product automatically handles every version or condition. Have a competent person determine inspection, permitted reuse and handling rules. A component quantity on a screen does not certify suitability.
Source and destination need separate meanings
Show where the assembled item was taken from and where each recovered output goes. Odoo explicitly distinguishes the source location of the product and the destination of reclaimed components.
For your brief, allow the destination and availability to follow the actual process. Parts awaiting assessment should not silently become ready-to-use stock. If your workflow needs a separate pending area or status, specify it and demonstrate it.
Odoo's guide addresses unusable recovered parts through a separate scrap order. That is its documented workflow, not a universal disposal rule. Your business still needs an approved way to distinguish recovered usable parts from rejected material without leaving both counted as available.
A warning is not a hard stock restriction
The Odoo page warns that unbuilding a product with zero or fewer units on hand can cause inventory inconsistencies. It also describes an option to confirm and continue past that warning. Therefore, do not mistake the presence of a warning for proof that an operation is prohibited.
If your requirement is to prevent dismantling an item the business does not hold, ask where the rule is enforced. If exceptions are genuinely needed, agree who approves them and how the reason is retained. A custom app must demonstrate the policy you commissioned, not merely display an alert.
Accept the feature with a changed item
Use fictitious products in your acceptance criteria:
- Dismantle an eligible item from a named source location and show the resulting finished-item balance.
- Use the appropriate assembly version or original manufacturing reference.
- Record fewer usable components than the recipe expects and explain the discrepancy.
- Keep pending assessment distinct from permission to use a recovered part.
- Route rejected material through the approved separate process.
- Attempt the operation without sufficient eligible stock and demonstrate the agreed restriction or authorised exception.
- Correct a mistaken record without silently rewriting components already used in another job.
For a production or inventory app discussion, begin with one representative dismantling record and the outcomes staff must explain. Financial reversal, cost allocation and any customer remedy require separate review; recovering parts does not determine them automatically.
Common questions
Can we simply reverse the original assembly?
Only if the agreed process also handles the actual item configuration, quantities and condition. A mechanical recipe reversal alone does not establish what was recovered.
Is an unbuild the same as a repair?
No. A repair aims to carry out work on an item. This operation consumes an assembled item to recover components, whether or not some of them later support a repair.
Should every recovered part be available immediately?
Not unless your reviewed process permits it. Required inspection and eligibility decisions must remain explicit.
