Holiday Opening Hours on Your Website: Change the Date, Not the Whole Week

A holiday closure should normally be a dated exception to your usual opening hours, not a permanent edit to every Monday. Specify which location and service the exception affects, what visitors see on that date, and what becomes visible afterwards. Then assign responsibility for checking every public channel that displays the hours.

This is a website planning guide, not a statement about legally permitted opening times. Have the business determine when it can actually operate. A website change does not establish that a search listing or booking system has also changed.

Keep the weekly pattern and the exception separate

Ask for a regular weekly schedule plus a list of specific dates. An exception should say explicitly whether the business is closed all day or open during one or more intervals. An empty field should not leave staff guessing between “closed”, “not yet checked” and “use normal hours”.

Google's special-hours guidance gives a useful product example: short-term changes can be recorded without changing regular hours. It also documents a closed-day setting and multiple sets of hours for a date. These are Google Business Profile features, not proof that your website already supports the same model.

For your website, agree that the dated exception takes precedence over the weekly pattern for the affected scope. Show an editor the effective result before saving: “On this date, this location is closed” is more useful than an unexplained empty row.

Name the place and the service

A shop being open does not necessarily mean its collection counter, telephone support and delivery service share those hours. Decide whether you need one schedule or clearly labelled schedules for different services. Avoid presenting a general “open” label beside a service that is unavailable.

Google separately describes “More hours” for services with differing times, such as delivery or takeout, rather than using special hours for that purpose. Keep that distinction when planning the data, while checking the actual options supported in each channel.

For a hypothetical two-branch business, one location might close for a local event while the other follows its normal week. A business-wide banner alone could mislead both audiences. Require location-specific details and make the banner point to them.

Decide what happens after the exception

A dated change should not depend on somebody remembering to restore last week's text. Demonstrate the normal schedule before the exception, the changed hours on the affected date and the normal schedule afterwards. Use the location's agreed time zone when deciding which date is current.

Longer closures need a separate decision. Google's guide directs businesses closed for seven or more consecutive days, or for an unknown period, to its temporarily-closed setting. Do not present its short-term special-hours approach as a universal solution. For the website, decide what visitors need to know during a longer interruption and who confirms reopening.

Opening hours also do not automatically cancel appointments or block orders. If those connections are required, specify and test them separately; a notice is not an enforced booking rule.

Check public copies, not just the editor

List the places showing hours: location page, footer, contact page, search profile and any relevant service screen. Choose one maintained source where practical, but never promise synchronisation without an implemented, tested connection. Give separately maintained channels a named owner and a visible check task.

For acceptance, use fictional dates and verify a full closure, two opening intervals, a single-branch exception and the day after the change. Check the public website while signed out, not only its editor preview. Record the Google Profile check separately rather than claiming the website save updated it.

Put these cases in the website project brief when discussing the site. The useful outcome is one understandable answer to “Can I visit then?”, with honest limits on which systems the change controls.
