ChatGPT

Turn lecture notes into a self-test with ChatGPT

Use a general-purpose AI assistant to generate practice questions from your own notes, then check the answers against your course materials.

Based on the official OpenAI page.

Written from the tool's official pages, listed under Official sources at the end of this guide. Check them for current features, limits and terms.

Try it (opens in a new tab)

Steps to try

  1. Pick one topic and gather the notes or readings you are allowed to share with an online service.
  2. Paste a short section of your own notes. Ask for ten practice questions of mixed difficulty and tell it the course level.
  3. Answer the questions yourself first, without looking at the notes.
  4. Ask the assistant to mark your answers and explain any gaps, then compare with your textbook or lecture slides.
  5. Where the assistant and your sources disagree, trust the course sources and note the difference.
  6. Repeat for the next section. Save the questions you got wrong for review.

Limitations

The assistant can state wrong answers confidently, invent references, and misread messy notes. It is a practice aid, not an authority. Check your institution's policy on AI use before using it for graded work. Educators can adapt the same pattern to draft practice questions, then must check each question and answer themselves.

Pricing

Plans, limits and features change. Check the official website for what is currently free and what is paid.

Privacy and data

Do not paste confidential, personal or copyrighted material you are not entitled to share. The provider says you can choose how your data is used; review those data controls and settings before use, including whether conversations may be used to improve models.

About the sources

The official OpenAI page blocked automated fetching, so its text was collected through a separate public extraction. It describes ChatGPT as helping with questions, explaining concepts, drafting, searching the web and turning rough notes into clear writing. The practice-question routine here is a common study method, not a vendor-documented result.

Alternatives

Claude and other assistants can do similar work. A dedicated flashcard app is better for long-term memorisation once you have good questions.
