Notability

Take lecture notes in Notability, then turn them into practice

A note-taking app that combines handwriting, audio recording and AI study aids. Use it to capture a lecture and review it the same day.

Based on the tool's official website.

Written from the tool's official pages, listed under Official sources at the end of this guide. Check them for current features, limits and terms.

Try it (opens in a new tab)

Steps to try

  1. Install Notability from the official site for your device and create one notebook per course.
  2. Ask permission first if recording is not clearly allowed. If it is, record the lecture while you write the key points by hand.
  3. After the session, tidy your notes while you still remember the context, and fix anything that is wrong or unclear.
  4. Try the summary and practice-question features on your notes, and compare the output with your textbook or slides.
  5. Correct or delete any generated question that is wrong, and keep the ones that test what you need to know.
  6. Move the best questions into a flashcard app if you want long-term review.

Limitations

Transcripts and generated summaries can contain errors. Recording rules differ by school and country. Features and platform support change, and the AI features may need a paid plan.

Pricing

The official site offers a free download and paid options, and runs promotions. Prices change, so check the official website for current terms rather than relying on this guide.

Privacy and data

Recordings capture other people's voices. Follow your institution's rules, and check what the app stores and sends to AI services before recording or importing material that is not yours.

About the sources

Based on the official page, which describes Notability's platforms and its handwritten notes, audio transcription and AI study features. The accuracy of generated summaries and questions is not documented here, so check the output yourself.

Alternatives

Goodnotes, Obsidian and paper notes all work. A phone voice recorder is a simple option where recording is allowed.
