Hermes Agent

Set up one low-risk routine with Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent, from Nous Research, is an AI agent that runs where you put it, with memory, skills and scheduled tasks. Start with one read-only routine in a contained environment.

Based on the official documentation.

Written from the tool's official pages, listed under Official sources at the end of this guide. Check them for current features, limits and terms.

Steps to try

  1. Confirm you mean Hermes Agent by Nous Research, and use the install options on its official documentation. If you pipe an install script into a shell, read the script first.
  2. Choose a model provider. The documentation says it works with several, including the maker's own portal, and with other endpoints.
  3. Read the security documentation on command approval and container isolation, and pick a contained terminal backend rather than your main machine.
  4. Talk to it in the command line first. Give it a small read-only job, such as summarising a folder of notes, and watch what it asks to run.
  5. Add one scheduled task through its built-in scheduler, such as a weekly summary, with delivery to a place you check.
  6. After a week, review what it stored in memory and any skills it created, and delete anything you did not intend.

Limitations

An agent that can run commands and keep memory is powerful and needs care. Setup takes more effort than a chat app, and messaging integrations need their own accounts. The documentation is broad and this guide covers only part of it. This guide is about Hermes Agent only, not other products that share the Hermes name.

Pricing

The software is described as MIT licensed, but the model and tool services it connects to may charge for use. Check the official documentation and your provider for current terms.

Privacy and data

Memory, files and messages you give it may be stored on your machine and sent to your chosen model provider. Do not connect work or client accounts until you have read the security documentation and understand where data goes.

About the sources

Based on the official documentation from Nous Research, which describes memory, skills, scheduled automations, messaging gateways and security settings. Claims about learning and capability are the maker's own.

Alternatives

A plain chat assistant is simpler if you only need answers. OpenCode and Codex focus on coding rather than general routines.
