Product Suggestions in Your Shop: Add an Accessory or Choose a Different Item?

A shop recommendation should make clear whether the customer is adding something or considering a different main product. Decide that relationship before commissioning a “You may also like” block. An accessory, a required bundle component and a replacement are not interchangeable sales instructions.

Start with a few deliberately maintained relationships, not a promise that automatic recommendations will increase sales. This guide concerns the meaning and placement of suggestions, not a comparison table or a new product configurator.

Name the relationship before choosing the layout

In a fictional stationery shop, a pen may be an optional extra beside a notebook. A larger notebook may be an alternative to the original. A notebook sold with a mandatory pen as a fixed set is a different offer again.

For each proposed relationship, write whether both products are meant to be bought together, whether the second is a possible replacement, or whether it is already included. Avoid suggesting an included part as an extra charge without explaining the difference. If the main product cannot be used without an additional item, disclose that requirement rather than hiding it among casual recommendations.

Keep a named person responsible for these relationships. A related category or similar product name alone does not establish compatibility. Where technical suitability matters, have qualified product staff confirm the exact claim; a developer should not infer it from a photograph.

Choose the moment when the suggestion helps

Odoo 19 documents three separate placements. Optional products are suggested when the shopper clicks Add to cart. Accessory products appear in Suggested accessories during the order-summary step before checkout. Alternative products appear at the bottom of the product page.

Those are documented Odoo placements, not a universal rule for every platform. They offer a useful briefing distinction: deciding on another main product belongs to a different moment from checking whether an extra is wanted. Specify the intended location and purpose instead of asking for “cross-selling everywhere”.

If the customer declines an optional suggestion, the route onward should remain understandable. Agree whether an overlay is needed at all, what dismisses it and where focus returns. These are proposed interaction requirements, not accessibility guarantees made by the source.

A recommendation is not a cart instruction

Decide exactly what each action does. Opening an alternative's details need not add it to the cart. Adding an accessory should not silently replace the notebook. If you offer an explicit replacement action, show which existing line it changes and ask what happens to quantity and selected options.

Do not infer cart behaviour from the heading Alternative Products. The cited guide specifies its location, not a general promise of automatic replacement. Have the actual implementation demonstrated before using customer-facing wording such as “swap”.

Show the additional item's price and relevant selection before commitment. If the shopper needs a particular variant, require that choice rather than adding an arbitrary default. Apply the normal availability checks and explain a now-unavailable suggestion without blocking an otherwise valid main purchase unnecessarily.

Keep recommendations maintainable

Agree what happens when staff retire a suggested product or revise a compatibility fact. The main product page should not retain an apparently current recommendation merely because its old relationship was never reviewed. Decide whether unavailable alternatives remain visible with an explanation or disappear.

Also decide whether staff curate each relationship directly or use agreed rules. Automated ranking is a separate scope requiring its own evidence and controls. This article does not promise personalisation, legal compliance or a sales uplift from any placement.

Accept the actual buying choices

Use harmless sample products in the acceptance walkthrough. Add the main item, decline an extra, choose a compatible accessory and inspect the resulting lines. Open an alternative without purchasing it, then exercise any explicitly agreed replacement action. Check the old selection, quantity and total after each step.

Include an accessory that becomes unavailable, a retired recommendation, an already included component and a shopper using a phone or keyboard. The result should explain what is optional, what is included and what was actually bought. Bring the relationship list to a shop-development discussion; it is more useful than an unexplained recommendation carousel.
